Better late then never right? Here are a few pics and a video of our fun in the snow.

The video is from a fun filled day at Grandpa and Grandma Carter's house. A few days prior of us going over Brent was bored from snow days and started to build a ski slope with the help of Kevin (Karissa's boyfriend). For all that have not been over to the house the top of the slope is the top of a set of stairs then over some grass, down another set of stairs and down a little path where they added a jump. Ryan who hasn't been on his snowboard since Evan was first born decided to try it out :). Ryan made me try to board the hill the boys were sledding down but I don't snow board. Having three children means no stomach muscles and my legs aren't strong enough to keep me up. I'll stick with snowmobiles. Hey Brent maybe you can use construction of a ski slope for your senior project, jk. The boys had a blast sledding. Thank you Grandpa for pulling them to get some speed, then Bower took over. Disclaimer; this is my first video editing so don't laugh.

Lucas turned one on Dec 18th. He shared a birthday party with Miles, Carleen and Briaunna (Val, Caison and Lauryn weren't there but they have birthdays in the first part Dec too). Then on his true birthday we celebrated again. He didn't get a fun cake because we were baking goodies the day of his birthday and I was pooped out.
Happy Birthday Lucas. We Love You!
The first cake is Jell O cake. It is Ryan's favorite cake and traditionally has it every year for his birthday. I have also started the tradition of using it for 1st birthdays since it is easy to clean up due to no greasy frosting, just cool whip.

So I am way behind in my posts!

This year was the first year (in 9 1/2 years of marriage) that I did some baking for Christmas. Ryan did help. He did an awesome job with the chocolate & butterscotch peanut clusters and dipped treats (he is much better and more creative then I when it comes to cooking).

Pumpkin chocolate chip, raspberry thumbprint, white chocolate peppermint pretzels, milk chocolate pretzel sticks, semisweet & butterscotch peanut clusters and chocolate chip peppermint bark

One morning Miles came out of his room after getting dressed and said, "like this Mom" (he asks to make sure he got dressed right)? All I could do was laugh, then I felt bad because he was embarrassed.

Evan is in the stage of deep thinking (for a 5 year old), like how did Jesus make the radio, computers and TV work. Or how other people were born before Jesus, and many other questions. His deep thoughts are usually exercised at dinner time. The other night (being a true boy and into good guys and bad guys) he asked,

"Mom why do good guys turn into bad guys?" Well, I said. "Sometimes good guys don't choose the right?" "But why do they not choose the right", he asked. "Because they don't listen to the holy ghost. The Holy Ghost helps us choose the right." I answered. "Ooohhh", he understood.

I truly hope he continues to understand.

Our candy cane Christmas tree

Miles finally turned 3 on Nov 30th we were driving home from Spokane that day so we stopped at Dairy Queen to have a quick lunch and let Miles pick out any ice cream that he wanted. He chose the ice cream with bananas (as he called it). Ryan helped him a little but Miles almost ate the whole thing (I upset at myself for not getting a picture).

Happy Birthday Miles! We Love You!

I only realize after the fact that we didn't get any pics of Thanksgiving. The boys all had matching orange argyle vest, they looked so cute. We went over to Spokane this year. It was great to see everyone, although I really didn't get to visit since I was following Lucas around keeping him out of things. He is at that age! The boys had a great time with cousins, they wore themselves out.

A couple of Lucas favorite things at 11 months.

He also loves to play catch with any ball he can find. His version of catch is throwing it at you (watch out) and you tossing it back to land as close to him as possible.

A couple guys that Ryan works with came into town so Ryan showed them around downtown. They got some pretty good pics of Seattle.

About two months ago (I know I am behind in posting) Evan had a very bad day. One that I wanted to post so that when he has another bad day I can remind him that he got through it and can be a happy again.

Each morning is a draw as to whether Evan will have a good or bad morning which turns into a good or bad day.

Well this particular day seemed to start out okay, he even had his friend Blake get off the bus with him to eat lunch and play at our house for a bit. At lunch Evan said; "Mom, I went to the principles office." "What?" I asked. "I went to the principles office today, I don't know why and I cried" he said. I let him know that we would talk about later when Blake went home.

My son! Only a month and a half into his school career and he is already at the principles office. I am doomed.

While the boys were playing I called his teacher to find out what happened. She was in the middle of her PM class so she couldn't say much just that he did see the principle and that he consistently can't keep his hands to himself (which is not like Evan). Come to find out after probing Evan, emailing the teacher and the principle calling, we found that upon arriving at school Evan was standing in line with a neighbor boy who likes to play fight as boys do so Evan was following along. Well the para educator apparently told them to stop a couple times and then told the teacher when she arrived to take the class to the room. The principle was right near them so the teacher asked her to talk with the boys so that she could take the rest of the kids to the classroom. It was rainy and cold so the principle took the boys to the next closest classroom (apparently this is when Evan started crying, he knew he was in trouble)to let them know that play fighting was not okay at school....she gave them a little pep talk and took them to class.

Later that day Evan was resting (reading books) in our bed which he does almost daily for an hour and started playing with the grass around our fake tree. He came running out freaking out saying its in my ear, its in my ear, am I going to die. I got him to calm down to explain what happen (remember he already swallowed a quarter). He said he poked a piece of grass in his ear. I took a look and nothing was in there so I sent him back to bed. Once again he came out freaking out...I can't see its in my eye. Oh boy here we go again, I thought. I tried looking in his eye to see if anything was in there but couldn't because it was glued shut, you know how your eye gets when you look at the sun funky and you just can't open them. Just imagine wrestling with a 5 year old to open his eye while he is kicking and crying "I never want to be alive". I stopped right then sat him up and sternly but lovingly said, "Don't ever say that again, I love you and daddy loves you, don't ever say that." I asked him why he said it. Gasping for air trying to calm is cry he said, "because I don't want to have anymore bad days." I just had to sit there and hold him after that.

It took a while of struggling with him and a round of flushing what ever it was out with water to get him calm enough to open it and tell me what happened. When he went to lay down on the pillow a piece of the grass had poked his eye.

A 5 year olds bad day :)

This last Sunday in Sacrament one of the speakers shared one of my favorite stories.....

“Years ago there was a little one-room schoolhouse in the mountains of Virginia where the boys were so rough that no teacher had been able to handle them.
“A young, inexperienced teacher applied, and the old director scanned him and asked: ‘Young fellow, do you know that you are asking for an awful beating? Every teacher that we have had here for years has had to take one.’
“ ‘I will risk it,’ he replied.
“The first day of school came, and the teacher appeared for duty. One big fellow named Tom whispered: ‘I won’t need any help with this one. I can lick him myself.’
“The teacher said, ‘Good morning, boys, we have come to conduct school.’ They yelled and made fun at the top of their voices. ‘Now, I want a good school, but I confess that I do not know how unless you help me. Suppose we have a few rules. You tell me, and I will write them on the blackboard.’
“One fellow yelled, ‘No stealing!’ Another yelled, ‘On time.’ Finally, ten rules appeared on the blackboard.
“ ‘Now,’ said the teacher, ‘a law is not good unless there is a penalty attached. What shall we do with one who breaks the rules?’
“ ‘Beat him across the back ten times without his coat on,’ came the response from the class.
“ ‘That is pretty severe, boys. Are you sure that you are ready to stand by it?’ Another yelled, ‘I second the motion,’ and the teacher said, ‘All right, we will live by them! Class, come to order!’
“In a day or so, ‘Big Tom’ found that his lunch had been stolen. The thief was located—a little hungry fellow, about ten years old. ‘We have found the thief and he must be punished according to your rule—ten stripes across the back. Jim, come up here!’ the teacher said.
“The little fellow, trembling, came up slowly with a big coat fastened up to his neck and pleaded, ‘Teacher, you can lick me as hard as you like, but please, don’t take my coat off!’
“ ‘Take your coat off,’ the teacher said. ‘You helped make the rules!’
“ ‘Oh, teacher, don’t make me!’ He began to unbutton, and what did the teacher see? The boy had no shirt on, and revealed a bony little crippled body.
“ ‘How can I whip this child?’ he thought. ‘But I must, I must do something if I am to keep this school.’ Everything was quiet as death.
“ ‘How come you aren’t wearing a shirt, Jim?’
“He replied, ‘My father died and my mother is very poor. I have only one shirt and she is washing it today, and I wore my brother’s big coat to keep me warm.’
“The teacher, with rod in hand, hesitated. Just then ‘Big Tom’ jumped to his feet and said, ‘Teacher, if you don’t object, I will take Jim’s licking for him.’
“ ‘Very well, there is a certain law that one can become a substitute for another. Are you all agreed?’
“Off came Tom’s coat, and after five strokes the rod broke! The teacher bowed his head in his hands and thought, ‘How can I finish this awful task?’ Then he heard the class sobbing, and what did he see? Little Jim had reached up and caught Tom with both arms around his neck. ‘Tom, I’m sorry that I stole your lunch, but I was awful hungry. Tom, I will love you till I die for taking my licking for me! Yes, I will love you forever!’ ”

Dad: What do they do?
Evan: Taste
Dad: So what are they called?
Evan: (eyes wide like the light bulb went off, he yelled) Taste Butts!!

I did jinx myself. Lucas is still waking up twice a night only now it is for a little longer of a stretch between times, 1:00am and 6:00am (it use to be 1:00am and 4:30am). I usually wake up feeling more tired than I did when I went to bed. Now I day dream about sleep.

10 Months and 24 days!!

Last night was the first night that Lucas slept through the night! It only took 10 months and 24 days (and Ryan wonders why I am always grumpy).

He slept from 9:30pm to 7:00am. When I woke up at 6:20am when the boys hopped into bed with me (Ryan was getting ready for work) I had Ryan go check on Lucas to make sure nothing was wrong.

It was strange to not wake up one or two time (usually two times) a night to feed him. I had to stop and think, maybe I did feed him and just didn't remember. Well, he actually did sleep through the night. Unfortunately Ryan and I didn't go to bed until 1:00am since my laptop died and Ryan was setting up another computer for me to work on.

Now that I type this I know I am jinxing myself and he will wake up again tonight!

Halloween day Evan's school class had a fall party and I volunteered to help out. It was a surprise to Evan since he kept asking if I would come to his school to help. I walked in and was able to watch him for a bit. It was fun to see his face when he saw me, he yelled out "I didn't know you were coming". It was a fun day, they painted paper pumpkins, played fall bingo, decorated cookies (the helper said Evan turned the sprinkles upside down and made a mountain on his cookie), listened to Halloween/fall stories, made spiderwebs (picture shown below), made paper bats and colored a scarecrow. I ended up some how helping with the busiest project, the paper bats so I didn't get to take more pictures.

Do you know how hard it is to get three boys to pose for a picture??

We have been going to The Farm for the last couple of years and love it. We have lots of fun jumping in hay, playing in a corn pit, riding John Deer tricycles, hiding in a hay maze and much more....
It was a beautiful day

Below is a quote that was handed out at one of our young women’s activities (I am 1st counselor working with the Mia Maids; I love it but am secretly happy that I don’t have daughters :) ). The activity was on self defense.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not in just some of us.
It’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Marianne Williamson

Self defense, what does this have to do with self defense you say?

Who are you and is it worth fighting to get out of a dangerous situation?

Yes, read the quote again!

Today I smiled (crazy I know) and then wanted to cry. My little red hair, green (red flecked) eyed little baby took his hands off the couch today and then tried it again and again. Daddy also wanted to see what Lucas would do if he set him down on the floor in front of me and yes, he took two steps. I want to be excited that he is on his way to the next stage in his life but I am soooo very sad, he is growing up way too fast and will not be my little baby soon.

What is going on in the world these days???

Today I opened up a fun size snickers bar to enjoy the smooth chocolate, the crunch of peanuts and the sweet taste of carmel to find that it was not so fun a size! Ice cream is one thing but to now rip me off on my chocolate/peanut/carmel goodness.....and if my memory serves me correctly increase the price too!!! What is going on with the food manufactures these days?? I can only imagine what is going to happen next! Milk will no longer be a gallon but sold at a higher price than a gallon does today. Butter will be sold by two sticks at the same price as four. Chicken breasts will actually be chicken tenders, cereal will be sold in those little single boxes for $4 bucks a pop......Give me back my chocolate!

This weekend we went berry picking with friends, well we couldn't seem to eat them fast enough so I made smoothies (we did freeze some too). This was the result. Yikes! Ryan was wishing one of the boys would spill on the carpet so that I would get going on ordering up our new flooring. The blackberry/blueberry smoothies were sure good!

OK, so I am a little behind in my posts.....
It seems we have made it a tradition to go camping on coldest weekends of the summer, Memorial Day and Labor Day. We took the three day weekend, went camping with our good friends Kerri and Enoch and froze our behinds off. This time we took the tent trailer (it was a lot of work to clean up for just one time use, we wished we had done it earlier in the season and it wasn't totally level so getting up in the middle of the night to get Lucas and check on the boys wasn't too fun). We did have a great time though exploring the Thousand Trails Paradise camp grounds and Mt. St Helens (as you can see we couldn't actually see Mt. St Helens due to the cloudy and freezing weather- when we were driving away we looked back and saw the Mountain dusted with snow!). While at Mt. St Helens we went to the observatory and watched a movie on the eruption, I looked over at the boys to see how they were doing since it was a loud and dramatic movie. Evan was fascinated and Miles was gripping both armrests. When it ended Miles said (starting in a quiet voice and getting louder) mom, Mom, MOM, I got scared! He got over it pretty quick.
The kids attempted to swim but it didn't last long, it was too cold out. Evan tried to keep warm by keeping all but his head under water. Miles kept warm by running around splashing, he didn't seem to care that it was cold. The boys tried killing themselves by riding down a little hill (between our trailers) sitting in the back of they toy Tonka trucks. Evan has a good bruise on his shin from ramming our trailer step and Miles almost decapitated himself going under our trailer, that was the end of that fun (although they kept trying to get away with going it again and again). We played putt putt, watched people fishing, played on the play ground and even attempted shuffle board.
All in all it was a fun camping trip (except for when the trailers brand new tire blew, at least we were two miles from home)with good food, yummy hot chocolate and great friends! Next year we will remember our coats!
**note: Lucas did not ride in Miles car seat- shown in a pic below, he was just sitting in it while we eat lunch at Mt. St Helens. Also some of the pics were taken by Evan

For about the last three or four weeks Lucas has been climbing stairs, well tonight he got up all of them and then he apparently wanted some toys out of the toy closet. He is not quite 9 months old and I don't think he should be able to figure out how to get toys out of the closet (at least I don't want him to it yet!). I love him to death but he is wearing me out these days while he is advancing to the next stages in babyhood.

He’s getting big. Tuesday I took Evan to his school orientation. He got to see his new classroom, meet his new teacher, see the play ground and check out the bus that he will be riding on. I can’t believe this day has come! At the end of the orientation I asked Evan if he was ready to go home, he said, "but I haven’t made any new friends". I let him know that he doesn’t have to make new friends all in one day and that there are lots of kids he will meet in the next few weeks. Walking to the car after orientation Evan showed how big he was getting......
Evan:“Mom I don’t want to hold your hand anymore when we walk, I am big now. "
Mom:"you don’t want to hold my hand?"
Evan:"no"
Mom:"what if I want to hold your hand because I love you?"
Evan:"you can still love me and not hold my hand."
What’s next no hugs or kisses?
First day of School pics.
Evan was so ready to start this new chapter in his life.
Where has the time gone.....???

Ladies, I must confess! I am divorcing my Remington and saying Heeelllooo to Braun! Braun my new best friend, oh how did I ever get along with out you before, my long lost love? Oh, the pain you cause but the freedom you give is worth it (the pain is not bad by the way if you use the starter head)!
Thank you Carleen for giving us the insight to this fantastic invention- the epilator (well not this exact one)! And thank you Kerianne for being brave enough to be the one to try it first after Carleen’s introductions. I haven’t shaved for a whole week and can still wear a skirt to church tomorrow and show leg but I wouldn’t want to scare anyone away with my whiteness (namely my husband since he so lovingly tells me in need to tan).

Lately when Evan says prayers he has been saying “help mommy to obey the rules”…. after a few days of this I asked him what he meant;

Mom: Who’s rules are you talking about in your prayers?
Evan: Miles, Lucas, and mine
Mom: What are the rules?
Evan: You know like teaching us stuff
Mom: What else
Evan: I don’t know, I don’t remember

I wish he could remember so that I could obey their rules and be a better example.

Lucas is 7 months old now! Crazy how time flies when you have three boys. We were getting ready for the day and looked up to see Lucas standing in his crib. I figured I better get a few pictures that very day before he changed (which they do overnight). By 7/18/08 when I took the pics he was standing up to things and crawling on his hands and knees a few feet then giving up and doing the army crawl which was faster. He was also following me around the house. Ten days later he is on all fours and pretty fast. He loves his new found freedom. He is now pulling himself up standing at the couch, loving the door stoppers and playing with all of brothers toys. He is also biting on everything, my shoulder, the couch, any toy he can get his hands on. He doesn’t really like solids; he prefers milk so that has been a slow start. He looks at us when we call his name. He is handsome, has red hair that I wish would stay and is healthy. We are blessed!

We got a bunch of good books this month from the library but these two are the most enlightening for very different reasons.

When Evan pick out the left book, The Gas We Pass The Story of Farts at the library he came to me and said Mom can we get this one its about farts. I rolled my eyes of course and asked how he knew that (he can’t read yet)? He opened up to a page which had a kid in the bath tub showing bubbles in the water coming from his bum. Now I had a decision to make; be a kind and open minded mom and allow him to be educated on what his body does or be the mean mom and just say no way that’s gross. Well since Ryan seems to be getting after me lately about being an overly precautions mom I figured what the heck. Evan was so excited to show Dad his new book and when he did Ryan said to me “I can’t believe you let him get that book”. It was worth it, the first time we read it I just had to enjoy it because Evan laughed, and laughed, you know the laugh that you can’t breathe. He hasn’t done that in a long time and I enjoyed hearing it! Did you know that “A healthy person releases almost half a cup of gas in a single fart…..and….. In one day, just over 2 cups of gas are released in farts.” The boys in my house are heeaalltthhyy!

The book on the right, Sidney & Norman a tale of two pigs is a book about a pig (Norman) who is neat and organized, always goes to church and every thing seems to come easily for him but he is always looking down at others that are not like him and yet he thinks he is a good pig and his neighbor (Sidney) who is always a mess, always late and things just are always hard for him and does not think that he is such a good pig. Well they get a chance to meet God; God told Norman three things; “First of all, I love you…., Secondly, your goodness is not the reason I love you……, third you’re not as good as you have led yourself to believe. You are prideful. You’re selfish. You look down on others….” Then it was Sidney’s turn. God told him three things; “First of all, I love you. Secondly, I love you. And thirdly, I love you”. It was a good reminder and a good story for the boys to hear. I might have to buy this one!
